A Guide for Online Dance Class Protocols (17 February 2021)

As we all know COVID 19 brought about quiet a bit of challenges. One of them being "online classes". Academic as well as extra curricular classes going online has not been the most easiest on teachers, students or parents.

As parents we have had to take a bigger share of the responsibility of monitoring and assisting our children in all their online classes. Being a parent of two myself I totally understand the struggles. And so today I am here with a blog to give some guidance to parents on how to help your child with their classical dance classes as well as practices.

Using the right device

  • Laptops, Chromebooks, Tablets or IPads are the most ideal for online classes. Cell phones are a terrible medium and should be avoided since they tend to be very cubersome to use with Zoom, Skype etc.
  • When using a laptop/Chromebook/Tablet/Ipads, make sure that you donot have too many windows/games etc open so processing power is not impacted.
  • If the child complains of low volume on the device, consider getting a bluetooth speaker.
  • Wifi spots or internet connectivity issues are a common issue. So select a spot in the house accordingly.
  • As a secutiry note : Please make sure they are not navigating to other websites/youtube videos etc while in class. (I donot take responsibility for any such wanderings during class since I cannot even see what they are looking at. It is solely the responsibility of the parents to make sure they donot navigate away from the zoom window.)

Protocols in case of bad connection

  • If you are experiencing bad connection logoff and log back in again.
  • Either parent/student should text the teacher to inform her of the issue.
  • Once a class is in session , any child in the zoom waiting room may not be noticed. So it is important to text if they are unable to join back.
  • If you miss parts of the class due to bad connection, the student can reach out for any clarifications or help.

Setting up a designated space for the class

  • I cannot stress enough how important this is. A designated space that is ideal to view the student head to toe while dancing is imperative.
  • Please have water bottle right by them so they do not have walk away to get a drink of water. It is important to stay hydrated.

Changing into their uniforms or class attire

  • This is an important step to get them into the class mode. Have them change into their class attire. Coupled with a designated space this sets them into a routine.

Setting practice times and submitting online videos

  • Practice is even more critical with things going online. Set a specific practice time and make sure they follow through.
  • Submitting practice videos when requested is key. It helps me evaluate individual corrections at close quarters and help them rectify those in the following class.

Hope this is helpful and helps make online classes go smoother.
